Chapter 11

“And I can keep a dog in the cabin, right?” Trevor asked the front desk clerk.

“Yes,” the man confirmed. “Pets are allowed for a small, non-refundable cleaning fee.”

“That’s fine. Go ahead and make the switch, please.”

He knew it was an idiotic move, but the dog had gotten to him, much like Tessa was. How in the hell was a guy to resist?

“Whatcha doin’?”

Tessa’s grinning voice came from directly behind him. Shit. She’d totally busted him.

Turning around to face her smile, he allowed a tight one of his own. It wasn’t like he would’ve been able to keep it a secret anyway. “If she doesn’t have a family, I figured I could at least help take care of her for the time I’m here.” He narrowed his eyes at Tessa’s smirk. “Stop it.”

“I’m not saying a word.”

“You don’t have to—it’s all over your face.”

“Excuse me, Mr. Jackson. You’re all switched over to the cabin, and here is your new key.” The young man slid the card key across the desk. “All we ask is you move your things before noon.”

“Thank you. I’ll do that right away.”

This time Tessa accompanied him down the hall to his first floor room where he’d left his packed bag on the bed, just in case. Her grin told him she noticed the moment he opened the door.

“I think it’s sweet,” she teased from the open doorway.

“I’m just helping out, that’s all,” he groused. “I don’t even really like dogs.”

“You like this one enough to sleep with her.”

Heat climbed his neck again. How had she even seen that? She’d been sleeping when he let the dog climb up, and when he woke this morning, sweating, with the animal sprawled half on top of him, Tessa had still been sleeping.

Hadn’t she been?

“Beauty tamed the beast.”

The beast comparison was starting to rub the wrong way. He’d been nothing but a gentleman. Though…on second thought, he could remedy that. A glance over his shoulder showed her still grinning.

“Keep it up,” he warned. “I’ll come right over there and kiss you quiet.”

When he turned around with his suitcase, he swore she was trying to figure out a comeback as she eyed the bed. His breath hitched in his chest. Had she made up her mind then? His pulse accelerated with excitement at the possibility of taking that kiss from last night to the next level—and with a bed so convenient.

Come on, Tessa. Poke the bear.

He advanced across the room, and her gaze shifted from the bed, to him. Anticipation zipped through his blood as he prayed for the words that would give him permission to kiss her senseless, and so much more. Awareness had deepened the beguiling blue of her eyes, but with his next step, she backed away, into the hallway.

Disappointment flooded through him, despite the fact her silence confirmed she was definitely the smarter of them both. Seriously, he’d actually been disappointed earlier when he realized the minimal damage to his car could be fixed in time for him to leave town without being delayed.
